Sometimes there is nothing quite so annoying and depressing as turning the key in your car and having nothing happen. A dead battery can be a big setback because it can occur at any time for any reason. Sometimes it is due to the cold weather and other times the battery has simply reached the end of its lifespan. There are a few ways to check if your battery is completely dead or not. Even if the car won't start, the battery may just be low or affected by outside conditions.
If you find that your car won't start and you believe it may be the battery, you need to find out if there is still any power in it. Try re-charging it first with a battery charger. Hook it up properly and see if this helps to restore any power to the system at all. If nothing happens, the battery may be dead. Extremely cold temperatures can make this tougher. A charger may have to be left on for hours before a difference is obvious.
Double check that your battery terminals are all clean and there is nothing obstructing them. They can become corroded over time and that can lead to battery issues. Be certain that anything you hook to the battery like a charger is put on the right way to avoid giving yourself a shock of any kind.
Try using a volt meter to test the level of voltage that is running through the battery. If it gives you a reading then you know that there is some kind of power running through the car. If it gives you nothing then you know that the battery is dead. If there is no power at all within it you most likely will need a new one.
To take out the battery all you really have to do is detach the cable from the negative battery terminal and then do the same on the other side with the positive battery terminal. There is often a battery clamp as well to hold it in place. Make sure that this is also detached before you try to take the battery out. Be careful when you lift the battery out. Some of them are heavy and you don't want to drop it on any other engine components or on yourself.
Once you get the old battery out you should take a good look at the battery tray. There is a good chance that you will have to give it a quick cleaning before putting a new battery in. Don't skip this step or it will be even worse the next time. Putting the new battery in is the same as taking one out. Put it in the tray properly and reattach the cables. Make sure they are hooked up to the right side of the battery. Always be careful when changing the battery so that you don't get zapped.
Make sure the battery clamp is also reattached. If anything is not tightened or placed right, the car will not start. Changing a battery is fast and easy. Be careful and you will be back on the road in no time.

As a software developer and Mac user, I've been doing a lot of research lately on whether Mac computers (iMac, MacBook, or Mac Pro) can get viruses, and I thought I'd share some more of my research here.
The short answer is that yes, depending on your definition of a virus, one Mac can get a "virus", at least a starter virus. As a simple example, imagine that I send you an email with an attachment, and you decide to open that attachment. If that attachment is malicious, it can delete all the files you own on your computer, including your photos, music, and any other files you have personally created. If that's your definition of a virus, that can certainly happen.
However, most people define a virus as a malicious program that is smart enough to know how to transfer its self from one computer to another to another, wreaking whatever havoc it wants along the way. With this more proper definition of a virus, Mac OS X computers have not had a virus to date.
Apple Has You Covered
On Apple's website they now show several large banners that say "We have you covered" when it comes to Macs, viruses, and malware. There are at least two primary technical reasons for their confidence regarding the lack of Mac Mac viruses.
First, the Mac approach of setting up a separate "administrator" account for doing dangerous things alert users to some malware approaches. For instance, while my script can delete the files you've personally created without asking for the administrator password, for me to delete all files on your Mac I would have to prompt you to enter the administrator password.
That's not something you're probably going to give me very easily, and in lieu of that, my script would have to find a hole in the Mac operating system that would easily grant me administrator access, and to date that hole hasn't been there.
Second, as mentioned, by definition a virus is a program that spreads from one computer to another. Viruses jump from one computer to another using open network "ports" on computers. Network ports are like doors, and as you know, some doors are open, some doors can easily be opened, other doors are like bank vaults, and still other doors are like bank vaults but behind behind a fortress so large you don't even know they're there.
This last approach is what happens with Macs. Because all Mac ship with a "firewall" enabled, and no ports (doors) open, my malicious program can't easily jump from one computer to another. And once again, even when a port is open, such as when Macs are in corporate locations, nobody has yet been able to exploit a partially-open door.
Buffer Overflow Attacks
Hackers also try other much more technical approaches to attack computers, typically "buffer overflow" attacks on systems (where a hacker sends more data to a program than the program is expecting), but without open ports on a Mac system, attacks like these have to happen through browsers or possibly network Macs on a local area network (LAN).
If a Mac ever gets a virus, you'll probably here more about this "buffer overflow" term, but again, nobody has successfully used this approach to date.
Apple Shares Mac OS X Lion With Security Experts
Interestingly, as I write this article, Apple has just provided an early release of their next operating system, Mac OS X 10.7 ("Lion") with security experts. As the world of hackers, malware, and viruses gets more and more complicated, Apple seems to be taking a proactive approach to share their OS X operating system with security experts as part of their normal development life-cycle.
Mac Viruses - Summary
In summary, yes, it's theoretically possible for an iMac, Mac Pro, or MacBook to get a virus, but to date nobody has created a virus for Mac systems. Also, as mentioned, Apple is getting more proactive in their approach by providing an early release of their "Lion" operating system to security experts, which is also a very healthy approach for them.
Most hackers these days seem to be focusing their efforts on other approaches, things like "phishing" and "spoofing", to try to get at your information through your browser, so for the time being, these seem to be larger concerns than potential Mac viruses and malware.

Precautions and Safety on Jump Starts
Your car battery tends to be an afterthought when it comes to auto care and maintenance. When it comes to our cars, we tend to worry about things like engine problems, broken belts or hoses, and worn or flat tires. You don't expect something like a dead battery to stall your car.
It is one of the simplest parts of your car. It is just one piece and it either works, or it doesn't. You can't repair a battery if it doesn't work. You can always buy a new battery that will last you a long time, or you can jump start your battery. That is what people usually resort to. But for some people the very idea of a jump start is alien to them. Many people are not familiar with cars or how they work.
A dead battery is nothing to panic about. As opposed to other automotive problems that can happen to you while you're driving on the road, a dead battery usually happens after your car has been already parked or unused. So, chances are you might already be in a safe place to have your battery jumped or your car towed, if need be. Most times, dead batteries are products of your car not being used for a few days, or even a week or two. Sometimes it is just an old battery that has nothing in it to give anymore. So you might be back from that vacation you had planned to take all year, or just stepped into the department store for a half hour and found that your car is not starting.
All you need is the proper equipment and a few very basic tips on jump starting your battery to get you back on the road. It is the purpose of this article to educate the driving public on the more common task of battery boosting and the safety precautions one should take while doing it to make sure they don't get injured.
Preparing to Jump Start your Dead Battery
Before you start to even think of jump starting your battery, there are a few things you need to take into consideration. After you have done so, follow these guidelines:
Always make sure your battery is dead. Check the headlights to see if it's really the battery. See if they're working or are not that strong. If they're not strong, you probably have a dead battery. It's important to be one hundred percent sure because boosting a battery that doesn't need a boost can potentially damage the battery.
Keep a set of jumper cables close by in the event that you will have to use them when you get stuck. You never know when you might need them, and they're not that easy to come by once you're stuck on the road.
If you're stuck, you should wait for emergency personnel to come by and help you. But most of the time the people that will come and help you are everyday drivers. Once you find someone to give you a boost, have them park next to your car, or if possible, in front of your car.
Open both hoods of both cars and locate the batteries. If you are unsure, consult the owner's manual. You might get confused by assuming it is under the hood, because in some cars it is located in a different spot amidst the engine, or even in the trunk.
Before you start connecting jumper cables, make sure there are no leaks. Hydrogen gas can be emitted as a battery starts to lose its fluid and this can become very dangerous. It is flammable and that can cause fires, or even an explosion. If there are leaks or other visible damage to the battery, DO NOT JUMP START IT! Call a Los Angeles towing service and take it to your mechanic to have it replaced.
Also, before giving your battery a jump start, make sure no part of either vehicle is in contact.
To be safe, make sure you have a pair of gloves and a blanket to make sure if anything does happen to set off the battery you are able to put it out and stay safe.
Once you have evaluated the situation of your dead battery, bring out the jumper cables. Make sure they are not tangled and once either end is attached to a car, make sure that the clasps don't touch each other.
