Starting A Vintage Pedal Car Collection

Starting A Vintage Pedal Car Collection

Jump Starter

Toy cars are now the rage, and car enthusiasts love to collect them. These collectibles have even achieved a broader appeal, becoming a kitsch item used in retro interior decorating. Restaurants that have racing themes use these eye-catching toy cars. Fun for children and adults alike to admire, collectors may display their vehicles on shelves, mounted on pedestals, hung from the ceiling, or just sitting on the floor. As you begin collecting, you may be surprised at the number of other car enthusiasts you meet who also have a toy car collection of their own.

Starting your own collection of vintage toy cars and displaying them is fairly easy, all you need to do is decide what model or type of car you wish to collect. Some collectors focus on a specific model, such as the 1955 Chevy. Others collect a type of toy car, such as Hot Wheels or pedal cars. Many choose a combination of these collecting techniques, such as models styled after the '55 Chevy. Once you start collecting, you'll probably find that there are way more types of toy cars out there than you had imagined.

By turning to the internet, you'll find a wide selection of vintage and new toy cars, as well as reproductions of vintage cars that may be well outside your price range. This is especially true with pedal cars; though a fully restored original can cost thousands of dollars, a reproduction using the original molds and paint scheme can be had for just a few hundred, and makes a wonderful display piece.

When collecting pedal cars, it's important to keep in mind that the older the pedal car, the more expensive it tends to be. The vintage and antique pedal cars are in high demand for collectors. If you're new to the world of collecting, you might want to make your first purchase a newer model to 'get your feet wet' and jump-start your collection. From 'fantasy' models like a pink pedal plane to more traditional hot rods, even new pedal cars often become treasured by collectors.

Don't be surprised if you find you can't stop after just one pedal car. Many collectors of this nostalgic toy have dozens of them on display. Some toy car collectors don't consider their collection to be complete unless they have one of every type they can find. In this case, opting for reproductions is an economical way to ensure that each model is represented in the collection without shelling out the money for the real thing.

Once you've started your collection, you'll want to plan out a method for displaying the cars. This is true whether you're collecting the tiniest miniature cars or pedal toys, which can take up a bit more space in your home. A good display case will protect the cars while still allowing them to be viewed. Other collectors prefer to have their cars out in the open, where they can be played with and enjoyed fully. Ultimately the decision is up to you, since your collection is for your enjoyment.
